In a universe where Superman went insane and murdered the Joker, the sight of a gun-toting Batman is pretty much par for the course. This issue proves that writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo are as willing as ever to embrace the zaniness of the Injustice universe, even as they begin forging clearer ties between this new comic and the Injustice 2 video game.
That latter quality helps make up for the one glaring flaw with the first issue. Those first two chapters didn't make it clear where the new series is heading or what sort of interplay there's going to be between comic and game. For the most part, those chapters busied themselves with introducing the Injustice version of the Suicide Squad and bringing Green Arrow and Black Canary back into the fold. But here, the series does develop a clearer sense of direction and lays the seeds of a conflict that can carry the book forward for the foreseeable future. And while the impostor Batman may have seemed like a jokey villain in issue #1, Taylor quickly molds him into a credible, ongoing threat here.
