"April Showers Bring May Flowers" picks up before the events of the first three-part OVA, "Those Awaiting a Star." It's not quite as unsettling as the recounting of series' protagonist Hatori Chise's past, but its disturbing themes and glimmers of hope still ring very true in this introductory episode. You won’t need to see the OVA to keep pace, but it does provide context to Chise’s actions. But even in this episode’s darkest moments, there's an overwhelming sense of wonder that enchanted me into its world deeply seeded in Celtic mythology and faerie lore.
Desperate to find a place to not worry about her survival, Chise sells herself into slavery to be bought by a powerful non-human sorcerer named Elias Ainsworth. He takes her in not only to train her as an apprentice but to become his future wife. This is by no means the typical love story between two obnoxiously beautiful, perfect characters. It's dark and foreboding with characters that are very much broken; it's in coming together that they can grow and put an end to their suffering.
