Batman hit a bit of a rough patch with its most recent story arc. Fortunately, there are few more dependable creative combinations than Tom King and Mikel Janin at DC right now. Their latest collaboration, "Everyone Loves Ivy," helps put the series back on track even as it shines a light on one of Batman's most enduring villains.
In terms of plot, this issue is about as straightforward as they come. Poison Ivy is back, and her powers have seemingly grown to the point where she now controls the minds of nearly everyone on the planet. As is so often the case with King's work, it's the presentation that stands out most. King's prose immediately creates a surreal, dreamlike quality that befits a story about mind control and domination. King relies on another time-tested technique where the the narration and plot are seemingly at a disconnect, leaving the reader disoriented and uncertain. Reading this issue becomes like solving a satisfying puzzle.
