This is a spoiler-free advanced review of Good Boys, which had its world premiere at SXSW.
How you feel about Good Boys might depend on how well you can handle 12-year-olds dropping F-bombs and brandishing BDSM gear at a strange man who may or may not be a pedophile. (I feel like I might be placed on some kind of watchlist just for typing that sentence.)
It's no surprise that Universal's raunchy coming-of-age comedy feels like an aged-down Superbad, considering it counts Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg among its producers - and the main difference between the two films comes down to the youth and naïveté of its protagonists. Superbad explored a fairly universal high school rite of passage, but when you're dealing with sixth graders, it narrows things to a more limited (and endearingly innocent) perspective - these kids are just looking for tips on their first kiss, and in their social circle, taking four sips of beer without hurling is comparable to climbing Everest.
