Spider-Man's Hunt Is Going Nowhere Fast

"Hunted" is clearly shaping up to be the most significant story in Nick Spencer's Amazing Spider-Man run so far. It features a massive scope, with Spider-Man and nearly every other animal-themed super-person in the Marvel Universe trapped like fish in a barrel as an army of hunters descend upon them. The problem is that after all the intriguing buildup, this story doesn't seem in much of a hurry to get anywhere. Issue #17 got things off to a sluggish start, and the second chapter is even more sluggish.

It's difficult to understand why writer Nick Spencer and artist Humberto Ramos are employing this plodding, methodical approach. one would think after all the setup and foundation-building that's taken place over the past year, the duo would be able to hit the ground running in the main event. But instead, this issue is content to linger on the initial chaos as dozens of Spider-man rogues come to terms with the plight they're in. There's a whole lot of running around in this issue and very little in the way of plot. There's also plenty of bland narration that ruminates on cliched notions of predators and prey and all the expected hunting metaphors.
