Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
The Strain's third season hasn't gotten off to a particularly thrilling or fast-paced start. That's pretty much par for the course with this series. But at least "First Born" went a long way towards rectifying that problem this week. Finally, Mr. Quinlan returned to the spotlight and the ongoing war against the Master took a significant step forward.
After spending the last two episodes skulking about while Setrakian flipped pages, Quinlan enjoyed a much meatier role in the conflict this time around. Through the recurring flashbacks, we learned more about Quinlan's past in the days of the Roman Empire and the true source of his hatred for the Master. The flashbacks tend to be a welcome change of pace on this show, both because they're used so sparingly and because they tend to unfold decades or centuries in the past. These flashbacks served two vital purposes. They showcased Quinlan's human side, proving that even he once had emotional attachments and a woman he looked to as his mother. And they also provided a very compelling answer as to his motivations. Quinlan being forced to give into his strigoi nature and feed on his dying mother is worthy fodder for a millennia-long feud.
