Cyborg #1 Review

With the goal of DC Rebirth being to bring joy and optimism back to the DC Universe, it's odd that Cyborg seems to be the one book that missed that particular memo. Vic Stone's new series is pointlessly bleak and grim. If anything, it reads like a relic from the early New 52 days, when the company's general direction skewed too much towards gritty darkness and forced attempts to reflect the real world. It's not the sort of directional shift this character needs right now.

Building on the recent Rebirth issue, Cyborg #1 aims to explore Cyborg's struggle to remain in touch with his human side in light of the revelation that he may be nothing more than a digital copy of the late Vic Stone. This isn't a bad starting point for the new series. Exploring the tenuous divide between man and machine is at the core of this particular hero. Still, it's disappointing to see Vic portrayed as such an angsty, despondent character when he generally stands out for being a younger, more happy-go-lucky Justice League member. The added darkness does nothing to benefit this book.
