Syfy updates the Dracula myth with its new series Van Helsing, coming from The Wicker Man and Hell on Wheels' Neil LaBute. Inspired by Zenescope's Van Helsing graphic novel series, the TV show follows a woman named Vanessa Helsing (True Blood's Kelly Overton) who is the daughter of Dracula's famous foe, Abraham Van Helsing, and seems to be the key to stopping a vampire apocalypse.
Based on the first two episodes, which will air back-to-back when the series premieres on September 23rd, this is a show that sits well alongside the likes of 12 Monkeys, Z Nation and Wynonna Earp, without breaking any new ground. This is much more the apocalypse through the lens of vampires versus vampires set on the background of the apocalypse. Van Helsing picks up in Seattle in 2019, where an unconscious Vanessa is being protected in an abandoned and booby-trapped hospital by a marine named Axel (Jonathan Scarfe). A series of events lead to her resurrection and the reveal that there's something about her that makes her incredibly important to the human vs. vampire war.
