I've tried to remain optimistic about Civil War II despite the very uneven nature of the first four issues. But with the release of issue #5, the time for optimism is over. Not only is this event failing to live up to the original, it's doing very little to justify this latest falling out among Marvel's heroes.
If all you crave from your big superhero crossovers is punching, banter and more punching, then maybe this issue will satisfy. Issue #5 is very much about spectacle over depth, as Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez break their massive cast into pairs for a little not-so-friendly sparring matches. If you've ever wanted to see the Miles Morales Spider-Man battle the Flash Thompson Venom, or Luke Cage trade blows with Blue Marvel, or Star-Lord duke it out with Captain America, now's your chance. If you would prefer an in-depth examination of the series' core conflict and how it reflects the world we live in, you'll need to look elsewhere.
