There is a murder mystery at the core of Jocelyn Moorhouse's The Dressmaker. The film, which is adapted from the novel by Rosalie Ham, revolves around the small town of Dungatar, in Australia, in the early 1950s and whether or not Myrtle Dunnage killed Stewart Pettyman years earlier.
At the outset of the film, Myrtle (Kate Winslet), who is now going by Tilly, returns to Dungatar after years abroad, bringing with her little other than a few suitcases and a sewing machine. Tilly finds her mother, "Mad" Molly Dunnage (Judy Davis), at home and, allegedly, unaware that Tilly is her daughter.
So, the questions unfold – Did Tilly kill Stewart, if so why does she not know; does Molly not remember what happened with Tilly; does Molly really not know that Tilly is her daughter; why does Tilly return now; why did Molly stay in Dungatar once Tilly left; where is Tilly's father in all this; what did the murder investigation turn up. On and on the questions go, but The Dressmaker is, at best, only concerned with them from time-to-time.
