For the crew of Hadrian’s Wall, the frontier of space gets a little more final with the mysterious death of one of their own. A pill-popping private eye is brought on to solve the case, but can he survive his own past? And is everything on the ship what it seems? It’s with that hook Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel and Rod Reis lift their latest Image title up into the atmosphere, combining the inky solitude of space with a little good ‘ol fashioned murder. The resulting read is a strong, visually immersive title, and one that looks to expand on Image’s recent run of stellar interstellar tales.
At its core, Hadrian’s Wall is a detective story, it’s damaged lead and ambiguous motives creating a strong noir feel. Such specific tropes lend a certain familiarity to the read, but two things keep this first issue feeling fresh. For one, writers Higgins and Siegel use the book’s futuristic setting to darn near perfection, the obvious isolation creating a very real and immediate sense of suspense. The best noir tales are those where everyone is a suspect, and that moody distrust is only heightened by the confines the orbiting vessel provides. Secondly, the pacing of this first issue is noticeably strong. Oftentimes creative teams show growing pains in their first issue together, but here the obvious synergy of the former C.O.W.L. crew really pays off. The scripting and establishing characterization is clean and tight, allowing artist Reis more freedom to work on establishing the world.
