The Amazing Spider-Man #18 Review

Warning: this review contains general spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #18!

Dan Slott has been writing Amazing Spider-Man for a long time now. One of the great joys of reading such a lengthy run is seeing plot threads seeded well in advance, only to finally pay off years down the road. Such is the case with Amazing Spider-Man #18, which paves the way for next month's Clone Conspiracy event even as it reaches all the way back to past storylines like Superior Spider-Man and Spider-Verse. This issue has some problems in terms of execution, but it should still prove very satisfying for long-time readers.

This chapter focuses on Otto Octavius, who (as we learned back in issue #1) is still technically alive in the form of a digital backup hidden inside the memory banks of The Living Brain. Here, Slott and artist RB Silva attempt to catch up with Otto, explore what he's been up to lately, and establish what role the good doctor will play in Clone Conspiracy. There's a lot of ground to cover, which isn't made easier by the need to cater to readers who haven't necessarily been following Slott's run since the Superior days. The script tends to get bogged down by expository dialogue and narration in the early pages, but luckily things do smooth out somewhat over time.
