"Those Who Cling, Those Who Struggle" was a satisfying --if slightly strange--end to this season of Berserk. There was no hoped-for climactic battle between Guts and the God Hand, but there was some nice closure for the supporting cast, as well as an exciting set up for the next story arc.
Last week ended on a nail-biter, with Guts and his allies surrounded by blood demons. This week the group managed to keep them at bay long enough for the monsters to evaporate in a haze of sunshine, thanks in part to a couple of side characters who really stepped up their game.
Topping the list of MVPs this week was Luca. Once again, my favorite character of the season proved her greatness by drawing on an abundance of metis to save both herself and an injured Nina from an army of squishy blob monsters. Stuffing her friend in a barrel and telling her to shut up and sit still, then leaping into a nearby well to avoid enemy detection? That was a stroke of brilliance, made all the more impressive by the fact that Luca had only seconds to decide on a course of action. I loved how her clever thinking was accompanied by equally clever camera angles, too. Tight shots inside the barrel juxtapositioned with wider shots of blood demons converging on the Tower of Conviction gave the scene a real sense of danger and urgency. I haven't always been on board with the art direction in this show, but it was definitely at its best here.
