Kevin Can Wait: Series Premiere Review

Making things worse right out of the gate for CBS' new comedy Kevin Can Wait, which premieres September 19th and features King of Queens' star Kevin James as a newly retired cop, is the fact that it feels like the kind of show that began with the pun-ny title. As in, someone came up with the name first and then sort of built a lazy, listless sitcom around the general idiom/phrase that's being used. Putting the final nail in the coffin though is the fact that the show, as predicted, is quite awful.

There's nothing noticeably offensive about Kevin Can Wait other than the fact that it's a rather trite "fat man-child husband/skinny eye-rolling wife" sitcom, but its utter lack of effort almost seems to ooze out of the screen. It feels as "over it" as its main character, Kevin Gable, a suburban New York cop who looks forward to doing absolutely nothing after retiring from the police force save for drinking beer and shooting paintball guns. Meanwhile, his wife Donna (a wasted Erinn Hayes) tolerates his exuberance and gluttony while actually keeping track of their "retirement budget."
