Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Following the events of "First Born," the status quo on The Strain has been shaken up in a big way. The Master has been beheaded, leaving his massive vampire army rudderless and adrift. But despite that victory, none of New York's defenders seem in any particular mood to celebrate their victory. Above all, "Gone But Not Forgotten" proved that the war is hardly over just because of this setback. This episode did a fne job of exploring the immediate fallout of the Master's "death," though as is standard practice for this season, there was one pointless, obnoxious subplot dragging everything down.
I'll go ahead and get the bad out of the way first. There's a reason I've come to dread any episode that features Dutch in a prominent role. Somehow, over the past two seasons she's managed to eclipse Zach as the most annoying character on the show. At best, Dutch is wrapped up in pointless subplots that have no bearing on the rest of the conflict (as we saw two weeks ago in "Bad White"). At worst, she drags down the rest of the main cast with overwrought love triangles. Last season, it was the Dutch/Fet/Nikki triangle. This season, it seems the writers have swapped out Nikki for Eph. Dutch and Eph didn't actually cross the line this week, but it's painfully obvious that's where things are headed. Fet is already feeling resentful about Eph taking over his old home and stealing his $300 million book, and stealing his girlfriend is clearly the next step in the collapse of their friendship.
