Batman #7 Review

It's not easy for DC's creators to maintain a twice-monthly schedule. "Night of the Monster Men" isn't just the first Batman crossover of the Rebirth era, it's also a way of filling the gap between major story arcs and allowing regular creative teams time to work ahead. So while this crossover doesn't come across as the most vital, earth-shattering conflict ever to strike Gotham City, it is shaping up to be an enjoyable outing for the Batman family.

"Night of the Monster Men" is certainly timed well with the upcoming Halloween season. The story involves Hugo Strange once again unleashing his fiendish creations on the city, albeit on a much grander scale than we've seen in the past. The one common thread between this issue and writer Tom King's Batman run to date is the effort to pit Batman against bigger, more outlandish foes than he usually encounters. The result is basically "Batman meets Godzilla." The titular Monster Men are massive and make excellent use of artist Riley Rossmo's knack for designing unique creatures. This really is the perfect follow-up to Rossmo's tenure on Constantine: The Hellblazer. He's able to bring a similarly surreal, supernaturally charged flavor to Batman's world. That flavor is further enhanced by FCO Plascencia's gorgeous colors.
