Shipwreck #1 Review

Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of Shipwreck #1, which will be released on Wednesday, October 5.

Aftershock Comics has quickly established itself through a simple strategy - bring together some of the best creators in the industry and let them tell unique stories. Unsurprisingly, that approach has worked out pretty well so far. That's definitely the case with Aftershock's newest ongoing series, Shipwreck. It may be difficult to actually describe this book, but with Warren Ellis and Phil Hester's names on the cover, does the premise even truly matter?

From the very first page, Shipwreck #1 aims to catch readers off guard and leave them second-guessing the story until the very end. What starts off as a very simple, dialogue-free look at a man surviving a shipwreck and staggering back to civilization quickly becomes more complex. This man may or may not be the lone survivor of the crash of an experimental ship. His companion may or may not be a police detective investigating said crash. Ellis very intentionally works to ensure that readers are just as confused and adrift as the main character. Is this reality we're seeing unfold? Is it all the fevered hallucination of a drowning man?
