Rarely has the Batman line been so consistently good. One could almost argue there's no need for a series like All-Star Batman with so many other Bat-books exploring different corners of this universe. But even with so much stiff competition, Scott Snyder, John Romita, Jr. and Declan Shalvey make a strong case for why you should be plunking down $5 for another Batman comic.
The biggest element in All-Star's favor is the fact that it's such a unique experience - both compared to the rest of the DC Rebirth lineup and in terms of Snyder's past Batman work. This series is far more manic and over-the-top than The Black Mirror or any of Snyder and Greg Capullo's stories. "Batman meets mad Max" really is the best shorthand in this case. The series is delivering a nonstop romp as Batman and the captive Two-Face barrel through an army of foes (major and minor) and face one challenge after another. This issue reads even better than the first because the structure is more controlled. Snyder's script still jumps around a bit in terms of chronology, but in a more controlled and purposeful fashion. The nonlinear narrative serves to foreshadow even darker developments ahead for Batman.
