Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of Gwenpool Special #1, which will be released on Wednesday, December 9.
As Marvel fans try to wrap their heads around the idea that Gwenpool is actually a thing and not just a goofy variant cover concept, the heroine is busting out of the pages of Howard the Duck and headlining her own holiday special. In truth, Gwenpool is just one player among many in this anthology issue, but her presence is a good indicator of what to expect from the book. If you crave a little Marvel-flavored silliness with a dash of holiday cheer, this issue won't steer you wrong. As long as you don't mind the relative lack of Gwenpool.
Gwenpool Special #1 is technically an anthology comic, with various creative teams working on individual stories. However those stories also combine to form a larger narrative centered around She-Hulk's holiday party and the best efforts of a trio of shady real estate developers to ruin the Christmas spirit. The fact that every story eventually ties into the bigger picture definitely helps give this issue a sense of cohesion above and beyond the holiday motif.
