Scarlet Witch #1 Review

Note: This is a spoiler-free advance review of Scarlet Witch #1, which will be released on Wednesday, December 9.

Things have been surprisingly quiet on the Scarlet Witch front since her return in Avengers: The Children's Crusade several years ago. Marvel is finally giving the character a long-overdue solo series, but it may be a case of too little, too late for poor Wanda Maximoff. This first issue does little to distinguish the book among the growing All-New, All-Different Marvel lineup.

It's unfortunate that Scarlet Witch is launching so closely on the heels of Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo's Doctor Strange comic. This issue hits too many of the same beats as it lays out Wanda's new status quo and a vague conflict involving the magical realm falling into disrepair. Scarlet Witch lacks Doctor Strange's easy charm. This first issue devotes the early pages to rehashing Wanda's troubled history and desire to be better than the mistakes of her past, but eventually transitions into a sort of supernatural murder mystery. In that sense, the book has a lot in common with the previous volume of Moon Knight, but again, it doesn't compare very favorably. This issue feel unfocused and too often gets bogged down in narration and exposition.
