During its investors call, GameStop reported on earnings for its first fiscal quarter, which ran from February 1 through April 30, and shared plans for drumming up business in the future. One plan: to let customers go hands-on with virtual reality headsets, a move already in progress.
Company executives announced that all of its larger stores will have VR demoes, and that 10 stores already have HTC Vive headsets for customers to try. In the near term, approximately 100 stores will have Vive headsets.
The company's driving mindset in getting VR into customers' hands is that VR tech will sell better if consumers have a chance to try before they buy—a perspicacious line of thought. VR is difficult to explain to those who haven't tried it, and those who haven't tried it understandably view the $600-$800 cost of admission as unreasonable.
GameStop plans to keep up with VR advancements and gear as it becomes available, such as PlayStation VR (previously known as Morpheus).
