So far, D Rebirth has been great about restoring DC's "meat and potatoes" franchises and giving heroes like Green Lantern, Flash and Wonder Woman the fresh start they needed. But what about readers who crave something other than traditional superhero fare? Where are the bold, daring, inventive books like The Omega Men and Prez? That seems to be the purview of the new Young Animal imprint. The Young Animal books are still set in the DC Universe, but they offer a quirkier and more experimental approach, one that's overseen by "showrunner" Gerard Way. If Doom Patrol #1 is any indication, Young Animal has a bright future ahead of it.
Way has never made any secret of his adoration for Grant Morrison's work, so it should come as no surprise that Way's Doom Patrol draws fairly heavily from Morrison's run. At the same time, the book has a kooky and unique voice all its own. Way isn't simply recycling Morrison's approach or his own work on the conceptually similar Umbrella Academy. This series is all about celebrating the weird, surreal side of the DCU. It requires no familiarity with the franchise. Way seems intent on catching new and old readers alike off their guard. His narrative bounces around among different scenes and protagonists, with plenty of non-sequiturs and a purposefully disjointed structure. That's not to say this issue is necessarily difficult to follow, just that it strives to be weird in tone and presentation.
