South Park: Season 20 Premiere Review

South Park’s lightning quick production schedule is one of the show’s greatest assets. It allows Trey Parker and Matt Stone to lampoon current events at a rate that simply isn’t possible on any other animated sitcom. But topical humor alone can’t make up for the lack of a good, solid story. That’s a familiar problem the series encountered again tonight as Season 20 began.

Now that South Park is reduced to a mere 10 episodes a year, there’s a lot of great material the show misses out on in its prolonged absences. There was a sense with “Member Berries” that Parker and Stone were trying to make up for lost time and tackle everything they’ve missed in 2016 so far. This episode cast a very wide net, covering everything from the Colin Kaepernick National Anthem controversy to online trolls to Hollywood’s reboot obsession to the Black Lives Matter movement to, naturally, the current US Presidential Election.
