Warning: Full spoilers for Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 follow.
While Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 couldn’t match the “Darth Vader! Ahsoka!” hype and momentum Season 2 had out of the gate, it still had some very notable story elements in play right from the start – including Darth Maul’s return in the Season 2 finale, and the introduction of the show’s big new villain, Grand Admiral Thrawn.
The decision to make Thrawn a part of official Star Wars canon at last -- after his appearances in Timothy Zahn’s beloved books were deemed “Legends” stories that didn’t connect to the films -- was undeniably exciting for many fans. And it was clear from the start that even if some specifics were different, Dave Filoni and his collaborators got the character’s core essence right, including his deeply analytical, measured approach to warfare – and how his appreciation for art factored in in a fascinating manner. It also helped that Lars Mikkelsen’s performance voicing Thrawn was perfect, bringing just the right fierce, intelligent vibe to the character.
