The Son: Series Premiere Review

With AMC's Hell on Wheels riding off into the sunset last summer, the network's hoping fans mosey on up to The Son for their next western fix - even giving the show the same Saturday night timeslot. Based on Philipp Meyer's acclaimed novel of the same name, the 10-episode drama isn't your typical action-driven oater. As Pierce Brosnan -- starring as the titular offspring of Texas --speechifies in the pilot, “We're entering the modern age... If anyone picks up a gun now, it's because we're out for quail or deer.”

While genre fans shouldn't expect smoking six-shooters or saloon brawls, they will be treated to plenty of simmering family feuds. Unfolding primarily in turn-of-the-century South Texas, The Son focuses on Brosnan's Eli McCullough, family man, wealthy cattle rancher, and wannabe oil mogul that won't let a little thing like morals stand between him and his drive to jump careers.
