Nostalgia is a tricky thing to master in superhero comics. There's a lot to be gained from shifting a franchise back to basics and trying to appeal to what readers love about the characters in the first place. That's certainly true for the X-Men franchise, which has been trapped in one of its lowest points for the past two years now. But nostalgia alone doesn't make for great comics. It needs to be paired with an equal helping of creativity and a willingness to embrace new ideas. That's a balance the relaunched X-Men franchise is still struggling to achieve as ResurrXion moves forward.
Building on last week's X-Men Prime #1, X-Men Gold #1 introduces a new team of mutant heroes led by Kitty Pryde. "New" being a very relative term, as the roster draws pretty heavily from the classic Chris Claremont era of Uncanny X-Men. And the mission statement is basically identical to the X-Men Reloaded relaunch of 2004. The X-Men have lost touch with their roots as superheroes, and they want to prove to the world that they they can stand alongside teams like the Avengers and Champions. It's a fitting direction in the aftermath of IvX, but there are points in this issue where the sense of deja vu is too strong for its own good.
