The original Secret Warriors is an extremely important piece of Marvel's library. It effectively served as Jonathan Hickman's introduction to Marvel, paving the way for everything Hickman would do afterward. It offered a dramatically different and very compelling take on the enduring rivalry between S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra. And above all, it's just a darned fine superhero comic. The Secret Warriors name holds weight, and it's a shame to see Marvel attaching that name to a new series that shares so little in common.
Other than the fact that both books star Daisy Johnson, there's annoyingly little to link the new Secret Warriors to the old. It's certainly less espionage-focused and more of a traditional superhero comic. This isn't a S.H.I.E.L.D.-focused story so much as the counterpart to Al Ewing and Jonboy Meyers' Royals - a book focused on those Inhumans left behind after Medusa and her allies ventured into space. With that in mind, it's a little bizarre that Secret Empire is being used as the catalyst for the new series. Caught between the needs of an event tie-in and those of a new Inhumans ensemble book, Secret Warriors #1 never seems sure of what it's trying to accomplish.
