Full spoilers for American Gods continue below.
As a standalone episode, "Prayer for Mad Sweeney" was an insightful and engaging hour of TV that shone a light on one of the core characters of this series. But as the penultimate episode of Season 1, this week's episode was a surprising time to take such a big divergence from the main story -- though what has American Gods taught us all season but to expect the unexpected?
American Gods was very much Shadow Moon and Mr. Wednesday's story when it started, but it's been interesting to see how much the show has shifted to dividing its time between its two other road-tripping leads, Mad Sweeney and Laura Moon, in the back half of the season. In the present, Episode 7 focused on Mad Sweeney and Laura as she continued to follow Shadow, but the episode spent much of its time in the past for a "Coming to America" tale. This hour focused on Anubis telling the story of Essie MacGowan (also played by Emily Browning), and through her eyes learning how leprechauns -- and specifically Mad Sweeney -- came to America.
