It's barely been a year since Bill Willingham wrapped up his long-running Fables saga, and already the franchise is making its big comeback. It's a good thing the final issue left so much room for a follow-up project. Everafter picks up where Fables left off, exploring new challenges facing the Fable community now that the mundane world has been exposed to magic. The result is a series more in line with the various Cinderella spinoffs than Fables proper, but one that should satisfy fans of the franchise.
Having already proven their merit on Fables: The Wolf Among Us, co-writers Dave Justus and Matthew Sturges take the reins from Willingham for this new series. As with The Wolf Among Us, their writing feels very much in line with Willingham's while still offering its own flavor. Given the new status quo of the franchise, there's a much more significant clash between the ordinary, modern world and the magical realm. In some ways, Everafter is a more grim, violent book than its predecessor. But in other respects, it feels more lighthearted. Seeing characters like Bo Peep, Peter and Hansel drawn into an MI:6-like spy agency has its definite appeals.
