Assassin's Creed is the centerpiece of Ubisoft's annualized blockbuster franchises, and as such the developer is incentivized to play it safe. However, more than most tentpole series, Assassin's Creed has edged close to potentially controversial subject matter: a Middle Eastern protagonist while America was engulfed in a politically-charged Middle-Eastern war; a less-than-sterling portrayal of the Founding Fathers taking advantage of a Native American hero; and the recent spate of Assassins acting as instigators in populist revolutions against royalty and the rich.
