Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
The survivors of the Canterbury, with limited oxygen, and a damaged radio are forced to make some difficult decisions in order to survive what initially seems like an impossible scenario. James Holden, who had been given the Executive Officer position last episode, is initially ill equipped to cope with the destruction of the Canterbury and the death of his lover. This opens up an opportunity for Chief Engineer Naomi Nagata to take charge and she quickly helps to get things under control.
The management of the situation and emotions on the Knight, Canterbury’s escape vessel, is fantastically executed. These five survivors are reeling from a surprising and frightening scenario and each of them reacts in their own unique way. Emotions and ego clash among the surviving crew while they try to compartmentalize what just happened so that they can find a way to work together. While they are trying to manage their emotions they’re also desperately managing resources, chief among them - air.
