Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
While last week's Vinyl went a bit heavy on the gimmickry, it was still my favorite episode to date. Mostly because it held a clearer focus and more or less settled in on one main story - that of Richie's spiral. This week's episode, "The King and I," also sort of held onto this concept of streamlining things and telling one bigger story instead of unleashing a bunch of smaller stories filled with the usual bluster and bravado. There's a good ensemble here, but the show works best when it hones in on some instead of all.
Even the non-Richie/Zak scenes this week felt a bit tacked on. The stuff with Clark and Jamie back in New York sort of interrupted the nice flow of the West Coast story being told. Which was a great story, actually. Kicking off with a newly-sober (surprise, this doesn't last) Richie and Zak having a much-needed confrontation on the plane trip out. With both guys, Cannavale and Romano, really getting to shine here. But Romano possibly even more since this was Zak's biggest episode to date and many fans still might be unaware that the comedian/sitcom star is a formidable force when it comes to drama (see: Men of a Certain Age, Parenthood).
