It was revealed early last year that Square Enix was working on a mobile version of Final Fantasy XI, co-developed with Nexon. Now, we are getting the first images from the reboot called Final Fantasy XI Mobile.
The images come from Ruliweb (via Kotaku) and were shown at a Nexon Developer Conference in South Korea during a lecture on what can be done with the Unreal Engine 4 on mobile. Don't take too much from the user interface, as it appears to be placeholder.
"Through this partnership, Final Fantasy XI, which has enjoyed 13 years of noteworthy success on game consoles and PC, will make a significant step onto the mobile platform," Square Enix boss Yosuke Matsuda when the game was announced. Nexon has dubbed it an MMMRPG for Massively Multiplayer Mobile Role-Playing Game.
Final Fantasy XI was the first MMO in the storied franchise, having hit in 2002 for PC and PlayStation 2, and an Xbox 360 version in 2006. The game was still available until earlier this year, when the server were finally shut down. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has taken up the current MMO mantle for the franchise on PS3, PS4 and PC.
FFXI Mobile is planned for release later this year worldwide for iOS and Android.
