Today marks the debut of the Fallout 4 Creation Kit, Bethesda's official suite of tools for players, on PC in open beta form. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users will gain access to the toolset in June and May, respectively.
"The life of Fallout 4 in your hands is going to take us all places none of us anticipated," said Fallout 4 director Todd Howard in a Creation Kit video accompanying today's launch.
Howard's not kidding. Using the official toolset, players will be able to modify virtually anything: environments, quest lines, dialogue, weapons, characters—in effect, the world of Fallout 4 is your irradiated oyster.
The game's developer outlined their hopes, dreams, and goals for Creation Kit in a lengthy blog post. "For Fallout 4, our goal was to make Mods easier and more accessible than ever before – for both the creators and the players. By building an all-new system with Bethesda.net we’ve made a huge leap forward in achieving that."
You can download Creation Kit's open beta by logging in to Steam, right-clicking Fallout 4, clicking Properties, then Betas. Click "beta" from the drop-down menu, and wait for the game to update. When the update is finished, you should see a "[beta]" tag next to Fallout 4 in your library.
