Mirror's Edge has made quite the triumphant return. Initially believed to be a one-and-done game following high scores but disappointing sales results, the series has expanded to include another game, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, and now a television show per a report from Deadline.
Endemol Shine Studios worked with Mirror's Edge developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts to secure the rights to the series, and will adapt it as a female-centered action show. Sharon Hall, president of Endemol Shine, said that "We clearly see Mirror’s Edge as a franchise for the global TV audience. It has a strong female protagonist, a wildly rabid fan base and a worldwide brand that Electronic Arts and EA DICE have done an amazing job establishing."
The games seem ripe for conversion into an action-packed show. Set in a dystopian society, both games star Faith, a "runner" who carries messages and other sensitive information between contacts while ducking government agents. Mirror's Edge played up parkour movement, giving players abilities to let them flow seamlessly from platform to ledge to rooftop.
More information on the show will be revealed as Endemol ramps up preproduction and looks to cast its starring role. In the meantime, look forward to Mirror's Edge: Catalyst on June 7.
Editor's opinion: As I see it, vistas and choreography will make or break this show. Not only did the original game play well (we don't yet know how Catalyst will handle), it was a visual stunner. Both components need to come together for a television series to work.
