Overwatch open beta will not have competitive play

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Early access to the open beta for Overwatch has begun. But if you want to be competitive and test out ranked matches, then you will be disappointed. They won't be there.

Game director Jeff Kaplan said that after the closed beta, it realized more work needed to be done. "We worked extremely hard to get Competitive Play in the game for Closed Beta," he said. "We've been reading feedback from the community and taking it all to heart. As a result, we've temporarily disabled Competitive Play for Open Beta so that we can rework the system and make it better. Our plan is to bring back a newly re-designed version of Competitive Play sometime after Overwatch launches."

If you didn't pre-purchase the game, you can still get into the open beta on May 5. The beta will run through May 9. If you need some encouragement to try it, watch Winston's pitch for agents below.

Overwatch launches for PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 24.
