The Amazing Spider-Man #12 Review

Peter Parker is facing a blast from his past in more ways than one with this new Amazing Spider-Man storyline. Not only is he butting heads with the Mary Jane-stealing Tony Stark, he's facing off with Regent for the first time in a non-Secret Wars setting. This is an eventful first chapter, to be sure, but also one that reminds readers just how fun Spidey's world can be.

This particular Spider-Man/Iron Man team-up proves far more satisfying than their recent pairing in Invincible Iron Man. Invincible Iron Man all but ignored the duo's shared history from the New Avengers/Civil War days. It's still annoying to see Tony written as if he has no memory of Peter Parker, but at least here Slott attempts to reconcile those old stories with the events of One More Day. And if the two characters are practically starting from scratch, at least their dynamic is consistently amusing. There's a very self-aware quality to the conflict in this issue as Slott moves through all the requisite cycles of superhero team-ups and portrays each hero as trying to outshine the other in their battle with a mutual enemy. This easily ranks as the most overtly funny chapter of the relaunched series to date, which is a refreshing shift from the dire stakes of the last few issues.
