Woody Allen's latest film, Cafe Society, drifts from what could have been a similar narrative to his past films to a fresh and worthwhile story of a young guy with a bright outlook who discovers the complexity of love. (And it works despite an uncomfortably telling line, given Allen's personal scandals, delivered by lead Jesse Eisenberg: “What is age? Love is love.”)
Set in the 1930s, Bobby (Eisenberg) makes the big move from New York to Los Angeles with hopes of making it in Hollywood. His best shot of getting in is through his pompous uncle Phil (Steve Carell), an agent to the stars. Though Bobby mingles with people in the industry, it’s Vonnie (Kristen Stewart), Phil’s assistant, who grabs his attention and changes his life for better and worse.
