After a fast-paced season premiere, Food Wars slowed things down a bit for the second episode. The Autumn Election cook-offs continue with the often unconfident Megumi against the extremely arrogant Kurokiba. It’s an interesting matchup following Soma’s and Alice’s battle — Megumi and Kurokiba are their respective right hands in very different ways, and we get a much closer look at Megumi and Alice. It’s both a great follow-up to Episode 1, which skipped over key character development moments for Alice, and a meaningful way to build on Megumi’s growth from Season 1 while keeping things tense and exciting.
Megumi is one of my favorite characters in Food Wars because she’s so unlike everyone else at Totsuki Culinary Academy. Throughout Season 1 she was shaky, not at all as sure of herself as everyone else at their incredibly competitive school. There were a lot of really sweet moments between her and Soma, who helped her embrace her talents and gain confidence in her cooking. Seeing her enter the stadium in this episode as the “dark horse candidate” who barely made it this far is really powerful — she’s finally as confident as she should have been all along, but she hasn’t lost who she is.
