Food Wars Season 2: Episode 1 Review

I’ve been looking forward to Food Wars’ return from the moment Season 1 ended, so much so that I was worried I’d over-hyped Season 2 for myself. There’s just a lot it needed to deliver — Season 1 was fantastic from its high-stakes tension to its deep character development amidst well-done, over-the-top fanservice. Season 2’s premiere moves at a bit faster a pace than Season 1 did and glosses over a key moment or two, but it’s still as fun, funny, and true to its characters as ever without feeling stale.

The premiere picks back up in the middle of the Autumn Elections’ high-stakes cooking competitions, this time with a battle between molecular gastronomy expert Alice and the brilliant but rough-around-the-edges Soma. This is a competition with high stakes — whether Soma will rise to the top of this elite cooking school and finally surpass his father’s ability, among other things — and everything from the music to the characters’ reactions makes the situation’s gravity abundantly clear. There’s enough comedy throughout to prevent it from getting unbearable, though, which is one of Food Wars’ strengths.
