Vice Principals: Series Premiere Review

If Kenny Powers’ baseball career never took off, you could almost imagine him trying to find validation as a power-tripping high school vice principal. Thanks to Danny McBride’s latest HBO entry, Vice Principals (debuting Sunday), we no longer have to imagine that premise as we’re introduced to such a character in the form of Neal Gamby.

The premise of the dark comedy is fairly straight-forward: vice principal Gamby and his rival vice principal Lee Russell (Walton Goggins) compete with each other for the new head honcho gig when the current principal (guest star Bill Murray) is forced to retire and care for his ailing wife. From the opening moments it’s clear there’s no love lost between these guys, as they hurl insults and a particular four-letter F-word at each other in a way that’s only possible on a cable network like HBO.
