Saga #37 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

When a story runs over thirty some-odd issues, it can be easy to forget how things started in the first place. It’s with that in mind that Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga returns from its latest hiatus, reuniting families even as it reignites and reintroduces the events that split them up.

First things first – Hazel and her family are together again! Yay! After months of star-crossed searching, it’s good to see our protagonists made whole. Of course, whole is far from safe when it comes to Saga, and it’s not long before danger rears its familiar face. And it is familiar. With many long running threads tied off or chopped down last arc, Vaughan returns to the first bit of conflict ever introduced – the war between Wreath and Landfall. He does so in a way that has real world implications. Marko, Alana and the rest, in need of power for their ship, are forced into a collision course with Phang, a nearby fuel-rich comet. It also happens to be a major setting for the ongoing war, with both sides battling for control over its vast resources.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #6 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Updating a property in a way that both honors the past while still being representative of the present is no easy feat, but thus far it’s a trick Kyle Higgins and Hendry Presetya have managed to pull off. With issue #6, however, the creators take the first true risk of this fledgling series, pushing the Rangers into new, and decidedly darker, territory.

For the original television series, the monster-of-the-week format didn’t allow for much in the way of adversity. Sure at times the Rangers lost their powers, or got eaten by a pig-person, but by and large there was rarely a threat that couldn’t be handled by a few color-coordinated punches or Megazord beat downs. And that’s what makes issue #6 so compelling at the onset. Rather than imbue his script with the usual it’ll-be-okay-if-we-work-together shtick, Higgins instead leans hard into dangerous uncertainty. The Ranger home base is destroyed. Alpha-5 is down. The fate of Zordon is unknown. These are big problems, and that’s before you even get to the shark-faced monster looking to steal their powers.

Narcos: Season 2 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This is a review for all 10 episodes of Narcos: Season 2, which will be released on Netflix on Friday, September 2nd. While I've watched the entire season, I will not be going into full spoilers.

Like many other Netflix original series, Narcos provides us with a unique, somewhat out-of-bounds viewing experience. As with House of Cards, Bloodline, Marco Polo and other streaming shows, Narcos' voice, tone, and look are very specific. But it also, like those shows, can become a prisoner of its own format a bit too much, so that by the time subsequent seasons roll around, the chance of providing us with something new becomes more difficult - because it's very difficult to top that first, introductory season.

All-New Wolverine Annual #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Spider-Man and Wolverine have a colorful history when it comes to team-ups and crossovers. All-New Wolverine Annual #1 keeps that tradition alive but shifts the focus from Peter Parker and Logan to Gwen Stacy and Laura Kinney. This issue realizes the fun inherent in that inter-dimensional pairing, but misses the boat when it comes to the weightier drama.

This crossover is most easily compared to the Ultimate Spider-Man storyline where Peter and Logan unexpectedly switched bodies. That's the crux of the conflict in this issue, as Laura and Gwen suddenly awaken to find themselves in the wrong universe and the wrong body. There's ample comedy to be had as each heroine struggles to cope with their new powers and make sense of their bizarre situation. Gwen enjoys many of the most memorable moments as she gets used to her newfound claws an swaps out her familiar Spider-Ham hallucinations for "Wolver-Hampton."

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

From the earliest month's of IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, there have always been various one-shots, micro-series, mini-series and other spinoffs expanding on the main series. Why not consolidate those spinoff stories into one ongoing series? That's pretty much the thinking with TMNT Universe. Not all readers will feel the need to read two simultaneous TMNT comics, but those who do check out TMNT Universe #1 will find a comic very worthy of standing alongside its sister series.

In fact, reading this issue is enough to make you wonder if IDW shouldn't have just gone the DC Rebirth route and converted the main TMNT comic into a twice-monthly series. TMNT Universe is not only very much in line with the main series in terms of tone and style, it feels like a vital addition to the franchise. This book builds directly on the current, post-Vengeance status quo as it explores the new threats that are emerging in the aftermath of Shredder's defeat. If this issue makes anything clear, it's that the future is darker and more unpredictable than ever for the Turtles. The catch is that the book doesn't completely stand on its own, and those not keen on the main series might not find much incentive to stick with TMNT Universe either.

The Turing Test Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

While The Turing Test generally walks an interesting if familiar line, it excels when it introduces some genuinely fresh ideas in its latter half. In the first, The Turing Test is a traditional first-person puzzler in which you navigate a series of rooms in a desolate research facility and solve a bunch of single-serving challenges, all while a questionable AI narrator guides you. It’s devoid of Portal’s incredible humor, but the writing and acting do a good job of posing interesting questions revolving around free will, what it means to be human, and of course, the artificial intelligence test from which this game draws its name.

The Turing Test also throws in an effective bit of environmental storytelling which has you parsing through personal items left behind by the researchers who formerly inhabited the Europa Space Station facility. I’m a sucker for learning about characters through this Gone Home-esque style of voyeurism, and The Turing Test handles it well. This adds a nice bit of personality to the seven-hour experience.

Suicide Squad: War Crimes Special #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

If there's any good to come out of DC's Suicide Squad movie, hopefully it'll draw more eyeballs to the work of John Ostrander. No writer has more profoundly shaped this franchise over the years. And with the anti-heroes and outright villains of Task Force X enjoying a bigger spotlight than ever, it's only proper that DC commission a new Suicide Squad comic from Ostrander. Suicide Squad: War Crimes Special #1 hardly reinvents the wheel, but ti does show Ostrander working his familiar magic with this team.

While the roster in this issue is fairly contemporary - Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo and the obligatory throwaway villain - the tone is vintage Suicide Squad. Ostrander gives this issue a heavy political slant as the team is charged with rescuing a former US Secretary of Defense before he's put on trial for war crimes. There should always be a political slant to this franchise. The Squad aren't simply the anti-Justice League, they're the group of sorry saps forced to deal with politically thorny problems the US can't officially involve itself in. This issue speaks to that premise.

The Amazing Spider-Man #17 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Amazing Spider-Man #17 continues the build-up to the Clone Conspiracy crossover, and this new chapter certainly doesn't disappoint. The fact that Spidey is barely a guest star in his own series isn't a drawback here. If anything, it on;y helps shine a light on the other side of this brewing conflict.

The Peter-light focus is useful, if for no other reason, than because it finally put the spotlight back on Hobie Brown. Hobie hasn't been a major focus of the series since the initial reveal that he's moonlighting as a decoy Spider-Man. Here we get to see Hobie settle into the role a bit more and struggle with the many challenges that come with being Spider-Man, from mastering the art of the quip to maintaining an ironclad secret identity. The issue starts out on a nicely comical note before transitioning into more dramatic fare as Hobie is dispatched to learn more about the inner workings of New U. There's a sort of inevitability to this story given what readers already know about New U and its creator. If Hobie were actually successful in this little bout of industrial espionage, there wouldn't be a Clone Conspiracy to deal with, right? But that knowledge only enhances the drama and tragedy in Hobie's ill-fated mission.

Assetto Corsa PS4/Xbox One Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Assetto Corsa is a truly triumphant driving simulation. On consoles there’s nothing quite like it, and the fidelity of its incredibly convincing handling really needs to be felt to be believed. Is it the best driving simulator on consoles? Yes; Assetto Corsa is absolutely in a class of its own when it comes to its unflinchingly lifelike physics.

But is it the best racing simulator for consoles, ever? No. Not by some margin. Assetto Corsa features a decent mix of cars (ranging from classic open-wheelers to bleeding-edge hypercars) and a modest selection of European tracks but, respectfully, Assetto Corsa wasn’t the best racing simulator released in the week it hit shelves. That distinction actually belongs to Codemasters’ F1 2016.

The Light Between Oceans Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

From Blue Valentine to Place Beyond the Pines, director Derek Cianfrance has managed to effectively capture the deeply upsetting and difficult to overcome moments in relationships. Often skipping the trivial challenges, Cianfrance weaves together the rise and potential fall of connection in a beautifully depressing manner that keeps viewers watching even when they want to look away. And Cianfrance’s newest film doesn’t shy away from these gut-wrenching themes. Starring Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz, and Michael Fassbender, The Light Between Oceans is a story of marriage, children, and the overwhelming weight of a guilty conscience.

Based on the novel by M. L. Sedman, the film is situated on the coast of Western Australia where Tom, a shell-shocked veteran, seeks work on a remote island as a lighthouse keeper. But before his first few months of what he hopes will be solitude, Tom meets Isabel. As the two begin their fairytale romance with an exchange of letters and newlywed life in the middle of the ocean, they’re soon met with not one but two miscarriages. In the middle of Isabel’s grief, a small boat carrying a newborn baby washes ashore. After some convincing, the couple agrees to take the baby in and all goes well until Tom finds himself in front of Hannah, a widow who lost both her husband and baby in a small boat that drifted too far out into sea.

Fallout 4: Nuka-World DLC Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Abandoned theme parks are popular settings in games these days (see BioShock and virtually any appearance by The Joker) because they’re one of the only places where you can put a whole lot of diverse and interesting over-the-top spectacles right next to each other. That’s in full effect in Fallout 4’s Nuka-World DLC, which is big on sights and surprises but light on meaningful decisions.

Our arrival in Nuka-World is as abrupt and forced, quickly funneling you into a tough arena battle with a raider boss. I found it tough, anyway – I showed up with a level 30 character, which is the minimum level at which the Nuka-World radio signal appears on your Pip-Boy, so I struggled a bit to stay alive long enough to whittle him down in the straightforward process of disabling his shields and then whacking him with everything you’ve got. Of course, if you were to roll in at level 80 or whatever, you’ll likely swat him aside like a bug - such is the nature of Fallout’s generally appreciated lack of level scaling. If you want to be challenged, don’t bring a Fat Man to a gunfight.

Pitch: Series Premiere Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

FOX's new baseball drama Pitch gets off to a strong start that's fully aware of the powerful story its telling. The series premiere works as a great intersection of baseball and smart storytelling that touches on relevant issues and has a great cast to back it up.

Pitch tells the story of Ginny Baker (played by star-in-the-making Kyle Bunbury), the first woman to play in Major League Baseball. The pilot picks up the morning of her first game pitching for the San Diego Padres. Over the course of two games, she deals with the overwhelming pressures on all sides demanding she succeed.

Pitch's marketing proclaims it as "a true story on the verge of happening," and that comes across in every frame of the pilot. This might be fantasy for now, but with our nation on the verge of potentially having its first female president, a lot of the larger social conversations in Pitch feel timely and honest.

Morgan Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The age-old debate of nature versus nurture gets put through the sci-fi lens in 20th Century Fox's new film Morgan. Director Luke Scott (son of Ridley Scott, whose influence is clearly felt on this film) makes his feature-length debut with a stellar cast, but Morgan fails to live up to the full promise of its premise.

Kate Mara stars as Lee Weathers, a risk management consultant sent in to investigate an incident where a genetically engineered being went rogue. She is tasked with determining whether the creation, Morgan (The Witch's Anya Taylor-Joy), should be terminated or allowed to live before it causes more havoc.

The scientists who created Morgan -- an impressive lineup of stars including Michelle Yeoh, Toby Jones, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Game of Thrones' Rose Leslie and Narcos' Boyd Holbrook -- are quick to call her "special" and brush her violent outbreak aside. The film does a bad job of explaining what exactly they were looking to accomplish with this artificially created human model, the L-9; essentially they're trying to prove they can create a peaceful model that isn't ruled by its nature as a weapon, which is why this outburst is a major issue for them and the company they work for.

Yoga Hosers Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

At the end of the credits for Kevin Smith's Yoga Hosers, there is a line proclaiming that the main characters, the Colleens, will return in the future. The name of their next movie is even given. Whether this is intended as a joke or a promise, those who have watched Yoga Hosers are more apt to view it as a threat.

With the movie, Smith—who, as he regularly does, serves as both writer and director—revisits characters and themes we have seen before. However, rather than functioning as a greatest hits moment for Smith, Yoga Hosers serves up a bunch of lowlights.

Smith returns to his last film, Tusk, to find the main characters – Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith, Kevin Smith's daughter) and Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp). In Tusk, the younger Smith and Depp play cameo roles as Canadian convenience store clerks working at the Eh-2-Zed. They have little to do and it functions mainly as an amusing reference to Smith's previous convenience store- and mall-based films.

The Night Of: Finale Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

From the very first episode, The Night Of distinguished itself with a crushing sense of dread that followed at Nasir Khan’s heels. It was there during his fateful night with Andrea. It was there as he cycled through the prison system and into the courtroom. And it was certainly present in this week’s finale as Naz waited to learn if he would spend the rest of his life behind bars. Yet, in the end, there was also a surprisingly optimistic streak cutting through the show’s darkness. The series didn‘t necessarily end on the note viewers were expecting, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t offer a gripping conclusion to such an “edge of your seat” crime drama.

The Strain: Season 3 Premiere Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The Strain's Season 2 finale was a significant game-changer. By the end, the elusive Occido Lumen had been located and Nora died in a failed attempt to prevent young Zach from being taken by the strigoi. One might think these twists would serve as catalysts for a newer, more exciting status quo in Season 3. But The Strain rarely ever seems in a hurry to escalate its conflicts. For better or for worse, Season 3's premiere episode sees the show trucking along much as it always has.

Right away, the only obvious change to the status quo is that our heroes are more divided than before. Eph (Corey Stall) is mourning the death of Nora and the loss of his son. Predictably, he's dividing his time between developing his anti-strigoi bio-weapon and drowning himself in liquor. Setrakian (David Bradley) and Mr. Quinlan (Rupert Penry-Jones) are busy deciphering their new prize, with the latter itching to get back out and rejoin the fight. Fet (Kevin Durand) is now spending his time conferring with Councilwoman Feraldo (Samantha Mathis) and guiding the military in their quarantine efforts. Dutch (Ruda Getmintas) is MIA in this episode, but theoretically it's only a matter of time before the writers cook up some inane new subplot for her.

Fear the Walking Dead: "Los Muertos" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The way last week's midseason premiere was structured, you might have made the assumption, like I did, that this week's episode would leave Nick behind and focus on one of the other story threads. That wasn't the case, however, because while we did catch up with Madison's group, much of the episode still remained strongly focused on Nick and the new survivor camp in Tijuana.

One thing I appreciated, overall, was that the people Nick's now fallen in with actually sort of had a reason for carrying crazy religious beliefs about the walkers that surround them. Alejandro, played by Paul Calderon, apparently got bit by one of the "infected" and didn't turn. That was enough to make everyone accept him as their leader as they, much like Celia, worshipped death and revered the zombies.

Berserk Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

With only a handful of episodes left in the season, Berserk prepared for its final decent into madness as the entire cast converged on the Tower of Conviction for a massive showdown between good and evil.

While not quite as strong as last week's episode, "Blood Flow of the Dead" still had plenty of great moments, most of which involved the fierce and fabulous Luca.  I admit I was skeptical when Guts allowed her to join the rescue mission,  but all doubt was swept aside after she snuck the heroes into the Tower of Conviction, cajoled her lover Jerome into helping rescue Nina, and even took a plunge out a window to save her friends. A lot of the heroics have been left to the men in the past few episodes, so it was refreshing to see a women take charge, even if things didn't always go according to plan.

Worms WMD Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

As strategy games go, Worms WMD isn't the biggest gun in the battle, but it's very easy to underestimate. This 2D battler can hold its own next to bigger and more self-serious strategy games using cartoonishly violent charm and clever weaponry that showcase exactly why the two-decade-old Worms series has stuck around so long.

Unless you've been living under a rock in the same way real worms do, you know how Worms' simple turn-based action-strategy combat works: You have a few seconds to move one of your squishy squad members around the map, and your turn ends once the timer elapses, a combat option is performed, or (most embarrassingly) you accidentally trigger an explosive or fall from a great height. Then the enemy gets a turn, and you can only watch and hold your breath to hope the AI or your human opponent will do something hilariously stupid instead of blasting one or more of your crew to bits. It’s a time-tested system that rewards both careful tactical positioning and reflexes and technique as you use their many gadgets to climb tricky terrain and reach an advantageous position.

Attack on Titan Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Attack on Titan is a peculiar beast, and I’m not just thinking about the disturbingly naked giants that prance around and try to bite your head off. Developer Omega Force’s third-person action game interpretation of the franchise goes through the plot of the anime and takes the first stab at adapting a bit of the manga that the anime has yet to cover. While it does a great job of capturing the brutal essence and fast action of the show, it has mixed results presenting the manga’s content and its own slog of an original ending in an interesting way.

If you’ve never experienced Attack on Titan, this isn’t the worst way to do it — that would be Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains — but of course it’s not as good as manga either. The roughly 15-hour campaign hits all the essential plot events as Eren and his crew join the military and seek revenge against the titans for destroying their families, homes, and lives, but you’ll miss a lot of the more nuanced details and political scenes. That’s not too bad for the campaign, though: the focus isn’t on Attack on Titan’s politics, but on decimating titans. I found a lot of the cutscenes to be a nice refresher for some events I forgot.

Mechanic: Resurrection Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Mechanic: Resurrection isn’t unique but it is something of a rarity in that it is a sequel to a remake. While they do happen, they usually happen for a good reason but what the reason is here, I’m not quite sure. Certainly, The Mechanic redux that Jason Statham headlined in 2011 was an enjoyable enough action romp but it didn’t exactly have audiences crying out for more - they could get more of the same from most of his movies anyway. Regardless, here we are in 2016 with the return of Arthur Bishop whether you wanted it or not.

We catch up with Bishop in Rio. He’s living a new life under a new identity and believes he’s put his murderous former life behind him. Someone from his past -- hellbent on dragging him out of retirement -- kidnaps the new lady in his life, and the only way to ensure her safety and her freedom is for Bishop to carry out three kills for him. So, left with no choice, Bishop has to travel the globe, complete the seemingly impossible assassinations, and do what he does best - make them look like accidents.

Master of Orion Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

An unremarkable 4X game by any other name is just as unexciting, even if that name is one of the great nostalgic darlings of strategy games past. In the case of NGD Studios’ Master of Orion reboot, wrapping itself in a legendary title and attempting to distinguish itself with flashy real-time combat and an all-star voice cast don’t make its bog-standard turn-based backbone any easier to get excited about.

I don’t want to spend this whole review comparing the New-MOO to the old, because when put directly side by side this game is arguably better. But the reason the original and its sequel hold a special place in gaming history are because of a pioneering spirit that’s simply lacking from this conservative reimagining. In the mid-90s Masters of Orion 1 and 2 offered a thrilling galaxy beckoning for exploration that inspired the imagination. But by modern standards New-MOO feels small and mundane. I feel like I’m looking at a diagram of a galaxy in a middle school textbook rather than an adventure-laden expanse of space. It’s something that has been done many times recently, and better.

8 Things to Know About The Strain's Return

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

When The Strain went dark on its sophomore season, hope was pretty dim for the characters. Eph (Corey Stoll) had just lost his son to Kelly (Natalie Brown) as part of The Master’s grand plan. Nora (Mia Maestro) became a casualty of the war when she was infected and preceded to kill herself. Miguel (Gus Elizalde) had just learned that his mother had also been infected, and Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas) had the scare of her life. In fact the only one things were looking up for was Setrakian (David Bradley), who had finally gotten his hands on The Lumen, but not without a huge fight.

When the series returns to FX for Season 3 on Sunday, August 28th, the story only jumps slightly forward in time to a very Strigoi-riddled New York. There the fight is as hardcore as ever, and the protagonists are more worn out from the ongoing battles. Here’s what you need to know.

Hollow Mountain: The Long Shadows Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Enchanted backpacks, musical numbers, ironically introspective delicacies - in the world of Hollow Mountain from writer/artist Austin James, anything goes. Dubbed "The Long Shadows," this first chapter is a charming, if familiar, adventure, one whose brilliant world-building often overshadows the characters living within it.

Set in the fantastically foliaged, critter covered land of Paeora, this first volume follows a group of adventurers brought together by chance, who in uniting hope to avoid the clutches of the ever pursuing Cloaks. If that sounds familiar, it's because it is - the first third of the book reads like an adventure checklist, ticking requisite boxes on its way to a larger vision. And given the thematic nature of the read, it's not hard to drum up similarities to other such works of fantasy fiction, with seeming nods to the Lord of the Rings and even Star Wars. That same by-the-numbers feel extends to the book's principle cast, which is made up of a collection of archetypes. There's Nicolas, the amnesiac young boy of unknown purpose; Roz, the sarcastic and capable leader harboring a painful past; and Gebs, a gorilla of a man whose brutish exterior masks a gentle heart, in addition to a fondness for fine cuisine. Even latecomer Merkle fills a narrative need, as the woodsy weirdo who knows far more than he lets on.

Extraordinary X-Men #13 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The recent "Apocalypse Wars" crossover was a disappointment for all books involved, so it's something of a relief to see Extraordinary X-Men moving forward again. That said, little seems to have changed with the start of the latest storyline. The X-Men continue to deal with the same general conflicts, and very often it's the character dynamics rather than the plot that stands out in this issue.

Strangely, this issue barely deals with the most significant fallout from the crossover, the fact that Apocalypse himself is now in X-Men custody. Instead, the plot centers mainly around Illyana's desperate search for her wayward pupil, Sapna and the global hunt for the corrupted Colossus. These conflicts mainly serve as an excuse to propel characters from point A to B and foster a little banter along the way. Granted, the banter helps liven up the book quite a bit in spots. The Iceman/Nightcrawler pairing is fun to read, as is the bickering among Forge, Wolverine and Jean Grey. But the solid characterization doesn't change the fact that neither manhunt (mutanthunt?) is particularly engaging at the moment.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Annual #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Kyle Higgins and Co. have had quite a bit of fun since the Power Rangers came to BOOM! Studios - so much so that they've invited some friends to join the party. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Annual #1 is a darn near perfect representation of what makes the teens with attitude so resonant, it's collection of highly entertaining stories mostly making up for the issue's high price point.

To start with the obvious - even with the collection of content offered here, $7.99 is an awful lot of scratch for an annual. What gives the buck it's bang, ultimately, isn't the amount of story here, but rather it's diversity. This first annual is chock full of unique content, with stories ranging from serious and relatable to wild and irreverent. And even better, it all works, each diverse chapter perfectly encapsulating the qualities that continue to appeal to fans new and old. It also helps that it's not all filler - oftentimes annuals are viewed as non-essential in nature, attached to the respective flagship but not necessarily adding to it. While this annual mostly adheres to that same approach, some stories - such as Goldar's origin tale - offer unique perspectives that actually shape characters in significant ways.

Kingsway West #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

If East of West and the recently concluded Sixth Gun aren't enough to quench your thirst for supernaturally tinged Wild West comics, perhaps this new creator-owned series from Greg Pak and Mirko Colak will fit the bill. But where both The Sixth Gun and East of West pair high concepts with great characters, Kingsway West still has some work to do in terms of the latter.

Like East of West, Kingsway West unfolds in an alternate America where history took a major left turn in the mid-19th Century. In this world, the discovery of a mythical substance called Red Gold has completely changed the balance of power and pitted the US government, Native American tribes, Mexico and even China against one another in a never-ending battle over this elusive resource. The result is a book that blends counterfactual history, fantasy, and good, old-fashioned Wild West tropes. Pak and Colak have generated a memorable universe, one where dragons and metahumans walk side by side with dusty, sharp-shooting cowboys. And thankfully, Pak doesn't go overboard trying to explain the finer details of this universe right off the bat. Most of the esoteric elements are presented in a very matter-of-fact way, and the script generally avoids plodding exposition or narration.

Graphic Novel Review: Omega Men - The End Is Here

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Last year's DC You relaunch is generally regarded as a failure, and when it comes to A-List franchises like Superman, Flash and Wonder Woman, perhaps that's true. However, DC You also served as a breeding ground for some truly fantastic, ground-breaking reinventions of lesser-known DC properties. Above all, it gave us The Omega Men. A book like this is enough to make up for 100 lousy Superman crossovers.

With The Omega Men, writer Tom King and artist Barnaby Bagenda set about reviving the dormant science fiction franchise and giving it a modern spin. But far from simply providing DC with an answer to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, The Omega Men: The End Is Here displays a rare ambition. In chronicling a massive rebellion unfolding in a far corner of the DC Universe, King and Bagenda crafted a heartfelt story about the futility and ceaseless nature of war. Ignore the trippy sci-fi elements and super-powers and you have a very clear allegory for the conflict in the Middle East. How many superhero books can boast that?

Don't Breathe Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Three young thieves' supposedly easy heist -- burgling the house of a blind man -- turns into a night of terror as their mark reveals himself to be truly dangerous. This simple but engrossing premise propels Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez's brutal new horror-thriller Don't Breathe, one of the most twisted movies you'll see this year.

The Detroit-set story centers on Rocky (Jane Levy), who is determined to escape her dead end life even if it means breaking into wealthy homes with her boyfriend Money (Daniel Zovatto) and pal Alex (Dylan Minnette). Their proverbial last big score is to rob The Blind Man (Stephen Lang), an old veteran said to have a small fortune from a legal settlement stashed in his home in an abandoned neighborhood. (Their stagnate Michigan surroundings reflect the characters' own desperation.)

The Hellblazer #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

DC's new Hellblazer comic isn't necessarily superior to its predecessor, but it's certain;y much more in line with the classic Vertigo series. The return to England and the presence of a few familiar faces helps give this series a comfortable "back to basics" feel. Just don't expect the same level of scale and supernatural action as Constantine: The Hellblazer.

In that regard, this issue goes over a little better than last month's Hellblazer Rebirth #1. That book's biggest sin was introducing a major challenge for Constantine involving the fate of the entire city of London, only for that dilemma to be quickly and easily resolved. This time, writer Simon Oliver opts for a smaller conflict, one that emphasizes dialogue and Constantine's relationships with characters like Chas and Swamp Thing. The interaction between Constantine and Swamp Thing is frequently a highlight, even if the latter seems to serve little purpose in terms of furthering the book's plot. More compelling are the WWI-era flashbacks that bookend this issue, but what they actually mean for the series is unclear for now.

Star Wars #22 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Star Wars #21 introduced readers to the SCAR Troopers, a crack team of Imperial soldiers tasked with bringing down the pesky Rebel Alliance. Issue #22 shifts focus back to those Rebels as they launch a bold attack against the Empire. One would assume that's where the two groups come face-to-face, but apparently readers will have to wait a while for the big rematch between Luke Skywalker and Sergeant Kreel. But while Star Wars has taken on a slightly more episodic feel recently, the simple joy of seeing Han, Luke and Leia in action never gets old.

The idea of a ragtag band of Rebels doing battle with an Imperial fleet might be nothing new, but writer Jason Aaron puts a fun spin on the conflict by having our heroes attempt to steal a Star Destroyer rather than destroy it. That results in a winning blend of familiar Star Wars elements - epic space battles, heroic sacrifices and a steady stream of banter between Han and Leia. It's also satisfying to see Sana remain an active participant in the story. There's only so much Aaron can do to create a sense of danger surrounding characters like Han, so it's important to have a handful of new faces like Sana who can both shake up the familiar character dynamics and leave readers questioning their ultimate fate.

Deathstroke #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

It's been great to see Deathstroke's popularity soar in recent years thanks to projects like Arrow and Arkham Origins, but DC's master assassin hasn't had a comic worthy of his reputation in some time. That appears to finally be changing thanks to DC Rebirth. Leave it to the writer who dramatically overhauled Black Panther in the late '90s to do the same for Slade Wilson now.

Deathstroke #1 is a very direct follow-up to Deathstroke Rebirth #1, meaning readers shouldn't use this issue as their jumping-on point. Christopher Priest and Carlo Pagulayan continue their look at Slade's current mission in Africa and the complex web of betrayal and intrigue that has sprung up around that mission. Right away, this is where priest sets himself apart. This isn't necessarily a political book in the same way Black Panther was, but there's a similar story complexity and a sense of actions have far-reaching consequences. Priest gets a lot of mileage out of exploring Slade's rigid moral code and the great lengths this mercenary has to go through to remain true to that code. He's written as more lawful neutral mercenary than outright villain, someone who kills only for money and absolutely never breaks a contract.

King of Fighters 14 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The King of Fighters XIV is an unapologetically complex game with a learning curve that ramps up into a sheer wall at times, but scaling that wall is a big part of the fun. Taking the time to explore the massive cast of fighters and master their intricate abilities is a test of dexterity and patience, but it delivers a satisfying experience perfect for those looking for a challenge to conquer. The transition to polygonal graphics from the historical sprites hasn’t exactly been kind to it, but this is still an excellent entry in the series.

King of Fighters XIV is nearly exhausting in the sheer amount of content it contains. There’s enough here to spend hours learning various moves, characters, and combinations and still feel as if you’ve barely scratched the surface. A total of 50 individual fighters provides nearly unparalleled variety when choosing just who to take with you onto the field of battle. Most of the men and women vying for the title of the King of Fighters feel unique, some radically so, such as Angel and the impressive variety of her Unchain Circle combo attacks.

Valley Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Like a modern Sonic The Hedgehog game, Valley’s run-and-jump gameplay is a whole lot of fun when you’re going fast, but the moment it slows you down it’s dull and annoying. Over its four hours this happens far too often: to expose you to a storyline that has no stakes or stakeholders, to explore its colorful but empty world, or to fight painfully repetitive battles. It’s hard to get invested when there’s little to care about, and the gameplay never provides any of the addictive challenge it really needs.

Valley’s first-person, mech-suit-powered platforming gets its excitement from playing with momentum - running down a hill will pick up speed, letting you launch yourself across colossal gaps. It’s a thrill that has you look at the world in a different way - there could be a hill you can speed your way down, just to be flung off of a jump at the very bottom, landing you safely on a platform that looked unreachable from the ground. In those fast-paced sequences, you feel a whole lot like a superhero, but sometimes Valley’s own mechanics have a habit of ruining them.

F1 2016 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

There are just five laps to go of the 57-lap 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix and I’ve got about enough fuel for four and change. Complicating matters even further, my tyres are on the brink of ruin – specifically my front left, which I’ve been loading up and brutalising around every one of Bahrain’s beefy right-handers.

I need to make a call: pit now and lose a few spots I won’t have time to claw back, or go for broke and risk it all. Ninety minutes of racing have reached a dramatic crescendo: a white-knuckle dash to the finish line in a car that may or may not make it. This is brilliant stuff. In just my second career race F1 2016 has swallowed me up in its Formula One fantasy. Furiously fast, satisfyingly stressful, and utterly exhausting, F1 2016 isn’t just Codemasters’ best F1 game to date – it may just be the best F1 racer ever.

Fear the Walking Dead: Midseason Premiere Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead's midseason premiere below.

Fear the Walking Dead returned for the remainder of its strained second season with a strong, solid solo episode for Nick. Now, don't mistake my positiveness for "Grotesque" as an indication that big things happened or that there were huge story developments. This was a (much needed) time out for the show, one that focused on Nick as he attempted to traverse the Mexican desert on foot.

I'm a fan of quiet, reflective episodes of The Walking Dead. Or, in this case, its spinoff series. They make for good palate cleansers and, in the case of Fear the Walking Dead, a nice pause that allows the show to reset in the wake of its ensemble getting split up and scattered across Mexico.

The Night Of: "Ordinary Death" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

"Ordinary Death" could almost claim the honor of being the strongest all-around chapter of The Night Of to date. There was plenty of drama to go around this week, both inside and outside the courtroom, all of which served to make Naz's future look more bleak and hopeless than ever. Sadly, one bizarre plot twist managed to dampen the excitement leading into next week's finale.

As the show dug deeper into Naz's high-stakes trial this week, one of the qualities that stood out was the matter-of-fact way the trial is being handled. I've compared The Night Of to Law & Order in the past, but this is one area where the comparison doesn't really hold. Writers Richard price and Steven Zaillian aren't attempting to dramatize the trial. There's no big "Aha!" moment where the defense suddenly pulls the rug out from under the prosecution and everything we thought we knew about Nasir Khan is changed. That's despite the fact that this episode could easily have gone in that direction when Detective Box was reluctantly dragged into the spotlight. In a different, more sensational show, it's easy to picture the inhaler questioning blowing a hole in the case and possibly even leading to a mistrial. But The Night Of largely grounds itself in reality, and barring any huge, last-minute developments regarding potential suspects like Duane Reade or Don Taylor, there's not going to be an easy out for Naz.

Berserk Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

This week was all about heroics as Isidro lead a daring escape, Casca leapt into action, and Guts outfought not one but two opponents.

"Reunion of the Den of Evil" got off to a great start, with Guts unleashing the beast on an actual beast. It's been a long time since The Black Swordsman has been center stage, so it felt cathartic to watch him unload a crossbow like a machine gun, throw a grenade, then guillotine his opponent before strutting out of the heathen cave. The sweeping combat shots and quick cuts really elevated the action, making this one of my favorite battles of the season so far.

Jean-Claude Van Johnson: Amazon Pilot Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Jean-Claude Van Johnson is one of three new comedy pilots Amazon is releasing on Friday, August 19th as part of their latest “pilot season.” The decision will be made down the line on whether it will be picked up as a full series or not.

When you think “funny,” you don’t quickly think Jean-Claude Van Damme, but at least the action movie star – whose heyday was in the late-1980s to mid-1990s – seems to have a good sense of humor about himself, or at least clearly realizes that it’s a savvy career move to go along with jokes at his expense.

In 2008’s Belgium-made JCVD, Van Damme played himself - caught in the midst of a post office heist. The film was a rather fascinating, introspective look at Van Damme (complete with a hell of a monologue, delivered in his native tongue), and in the years since, he’s had fun with his image in pop culture, perhaps most notably in a popular Volvo ad where he did his famous split in-between two trucks.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Any game bearing the Deus Ex name sets a high bar for itself, and yet, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided clears it handily. The followup to Deus Ex: Human Revolution retains the strong gameplay blueprint of choice-driven stealth and RPG gameplay that defines the series, but its superlative map and mission designs elevate it to new highs.

Mankind Divided’s gorgeously realized version of Prague is deeply infused with meaty, multi-part quests that give you plenty of chances to leverage its toy chest of cool gadgets and abilities. Its story is just slightly limited in scope compared to the far-reaching conspiracies the plot often alludes to, but in terms of raw gameplay, this is the best the series has ever been.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

As far ideas for spin-off games go, Metroid Prime: Federation Force found an interesting angle that fits into Nintendo’s sci-fi adventure series in its squad of mech-pilot marines that deploy on missions to fight the scum of the universe. I can’t say I didn’t have a few good, fun co-op action moments during campaign mode, and Federation Force’s varied missions and settings kept me interested. But no matter what the objective, my squad’s momentum was hindered by a boring primary weapon and the scarcity of special ammo needed to shoot the cool guns. And playing alone – well, I don’t recommend it.

It’s true that Federation Force’s bobble-headed soldiers look absolutely weird, but elsewhere the art style is used effectively to create some diverse spaces for up to four players to run around in. The three visually distinct planets of Excelcion, Bion, and Talvania have sharply contrasting fire, ice, and industrial looks that are packed with lots of neat architecture which captures the feel of environments we’ve seen in console Metroid Prime games. Plus, with 3D enabled, the added depth perception made me feel like I was right behind the visor of one of those mechs.

Hitman Episode 4: Bangkok Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Hotels are perfect locations for Hitman games. Squeezing a large number of living spaces, entertainment areas, and utilitarian facilities like kitchens and basements and such into a single building results in an environment brimming with gameplay potential. Hitman Episode 4: Bangkok is no exception to this rule, taking 47 to Southeast Asia for a fun, two-target hit at a luxury riverside Thai resort dubbed the Himmapan.

I’d actually expected something a little more densely-packed, with narrow, branching halls and lower ceilings (something that better emulated the slightly more cramped and intimate feel of a real hotel). A place more along the lines of the Hungarian hotel featured in the memorable Hitman: Codename 47/Hitman Contracts mission ‘Traditions of the Trade’, for instance. As it stands there really doesn’t feel like there are even close to enough rooms in this Thai hotel to support the multiple bars and lounges, as well as its large restaurant. (To be honest it feels like there’s more armed security in the Himmapan than there are actual suites.)

Grow Up Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

"Grow Up" sounds like a mean-spirited command growled at someone enjoying some childlike fun. But it also speaks to how Ubisoft approached this sequel to last year's Grow Home. Its intentionally clumsy climbing and collection gameplay ideas feel more mature and well-considered here, while at the same time it celebrates the freedom to move about and explore by giving us a big chunk of a literal world. As a sequel, Grow Up fails only to meaningfully expand on the original’s concepts to the point where they renewed the touch of childlike wonder that came from discovering them.

The four to six hours of gameplay that follow your spaceship’s crash landing on a plant-rich world follow a familiar pattern, enriched by several smart additions. In fact, Grow Up usually assumes you've played the previous game (and you should), as it offers only the slightest introductory help when the adorably ragdolly robot protagonist B.U.D. first finds a star plant. Much like Jack's beanstalk, these twisting lifeforms stretch ever upward toward the sky as B.U.D. steers their shoots toward nutrients glowing in nearby glowing rocks. There are four now, all carefully positioned to aim toward fragments of B.U.D.'s ship, and as with Grow Home, much of Grow Up's fun comes from making careful ascents up their sides while avoiding the ever-present risk of falling back down miles below.

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Final Fantasy may be one of the most successful gaming franchises in history, but it hasn't had much luck as a film series. Both Advent Children and Spirits Within failed to resonate with audiences despite Square Enix spending millions on cutting edge visuals and big Hollywood names. Blame it on convoluted stories that alienated the audience from whatever message was supposed to be conveyed.  Fast forward to 2016, when you'd think the studio would do things differently by making their latest film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV cohesive. Alas, it too ends up being a beautiful head scratcher that never quite connects during its nearly two hour runtime.

Ben-Hur Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Director Timur Bekmambetov looks to combine his particular action style with a classic tale of Christian forgiveness in Ben-Hur, the latest adaptation of the 1880 novel by Lew Wallace. Of course, he’s following in some pretty big footsteps -- the 1959 Charlton Heston epic in particular (also based on the book) won 11 Academy Awards, a feat achieved by only three films in history to date. Unfortunately, this new Ben-Hur is in no danger of matching that accomplishment.

Sure, it’s not fair to expect such success from this new film, and besides, we all know neither box-office nor Oscars are necessarily indicative of good moviemaking. But at the same time, viewing Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur does leave one wondering why anyone even felt the need to remake the story in the first place. The Kazakh helmer has directed some stylish films, like the Russian fantasy-thriller Night Watch and his Hollywood debut, Wanted. But his flair for visuals and action doesn’t mesh terribly well with this particular story.

The Tick is one of three new comedy pilots Amazon is releasing on Friday, August 19th as part of their latest “pilot season.” The decision will be made down the line on whether it will be picked up as a full series or not.

Considering he’s still something of a cult character, The Tick has proven to be impressively durable, making his way through several iterations at this point. Now, 30 years after Ben Edlund created him as the mascot for his local comic book store (before branching him off into his own comic), the goofy superhero is back in a new live-action adaptation from Amazon.

Also of note here is that Edlund has been the primary guiding force behind The Tick the entire time, including the Saturday morning animated series in the 1990s -- which introduced the character to a wider audience -- and the short-lived FOX live-action series from 2001. Returning to the character after writing for many several TV series (including Firefly, Angel, Gotham and several seasons on Supernatural, where he brought his quirky wit to some of the show’s most memorable episodes), Edlund has given The Tick his biggest overhaul to date.

Deus Ex Go Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Following in the footsteps of surprisingly excellent turn-based puzzle games based on Square Enix’s big action series, Deus Ex Go blends the familiar look and feel of the cybernetic dystopian world with some clever hacking puzzles. And while it’s lighter than its predecessors in terms of the amount of content included, Deus Ex Go is decidedly more challenging, offering stage after stage of brain-teasing and occasionally maddening puzzles that are often a joy to solve.

Beating Deus Ex Go’s stages requires a clever mix of stealth abilities and the movement patterns of enemies to allow Adam Jensen to slip by unnoticed. Though most abilities and foes are revealed early in the three-hour campaign, the adventure’s difficulty intensifies by layering on complexity to those initial ideas. (It’ll last a little longer if the truly testing late-game puzzles stump you for a while — and there’s no shame in that.)
