With superhero movies reaching a saturation point and recent video game-based movies like Warcraft and Assassin's Creed performing poorly at the box office, studios may need to start looking elsewhere for new franchises. And while the recent Ghost in the Shell adaptation blanked at the box office in its debut, studios still have plenty of anime/manga properties in the works to fuel their summer blockbusters.
Ghost in the Shell is just the first of many live-action anime remakes hitting theaters and streaming services in the years to come. From Death Note to Naruto, here are the anime remakes in varying stages of development that you should be keeping an eye on.
It remains to be seen if Ghost in the Shell's lukewarm box office performance will impact any of these upcoming projects. While we were fairly happy with the final product (check out our Ghost in the Shell review), audiences failed to turn out, and now the film is expected to lose at least $60 million when all is said and done.
