Going into Smurfs: The Lost Village, you might expect a few things, and as the third film in this franchise in the last six years, they might not all be good. But what you might not expect is for the film to deal with issues of female identity in a predominantly male-driven society, or how difficult it can often be to try and find your purpose in life. But, the thing is that’s exactly the story at the heart of Smurfs: The Lost Village.
Directed by Kelly Asbury, The Lost Village brings audiences back into the microscopic world of The Smurfs, the lovable blue magical creatures living in their own secluded villages in the forest. However, this time The Lost Village is focusing almost exclusively on Smurfette (Demi Lovato), who, as the film illustrates in its opening narration, isn’t necessarily the most dynamic character in the Smurfs universe (has she ever really been?).
