The Walking Dead #166 Review

After several issues featuring the Walking Dead cast waging a desperate war against a vast horde of undead, the series is eager to remind us that humans are the true enemy in this post-apocalyptic world. The citizens of Alexandria may have survived a clash with the Whisperers and a massive zombie killing spree, but it could be the resurgent Saviors that undo the fragile peace Rick has built up in recent years.

Not that this issue doesn't still feature its fair share of zombie carnage, but the focus gradually shifts from action to suspense as Rick and friends find themselves the target of Sherry's wrath. This issue is propelled by a slowly mounting sense of dread as tensions flare and Rick struggles to maintain peace between two agitated groups. The result is a more intimate story than we've seen from the series lately, but one that feels no less dangerous or unpredictable because of that.
