PC component maker Gigabyte is trying its hand at mechanical keyboards once again, this time with the $140 Aorus K9 Optical (See it on Amazon). Like most keyboards in this price range it brings full RGB backlighting and a premium look and feel to the table, but rather than using traditional mechanical switches, Gigabyte followed the lead of Bloody, Razer and Roccat and crafted a proprietary key switch dubbed Flaretech. They’re optical switches, meaning they use light rather than mechanical parts to actuate. Gigabyte claims the optical switch’s speedier debounce time and lack of metal parts offers a faster response, and, implicitly, an easier path to victory. How do those promises hold up in the real world?
