Not only is publishing a Shuri comic a sensible move on Marvel's part, it would be downright foolish for them not to take advantage of the character's massive popularity boost this year. The catch is that the Shuri of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a very different character from the one that's been appearing in Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther run these past few years. This miniseries has to somehow juggle appealing to MCU fans without negating Shuri's ongoing story in the process. It succeeds about as well as could be hoped in that regard.
The new series springs very naturally from the current Black Panther status quo. With T'Challa missing somewhere in deep space, Wakanda is left without a spiritual and political figurehead. Thus, it falls on Shuri to venture outside her lab and become the leader Wakanda needs. One of the best things that can be said for this book is it feel like it could easily be an arc of Coates' main Black Panther series.
