Batman #50 Review

Batman #50 isn't just the final chapter of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's "Superheavy" storyline, it's also their penultimate issue on the series as a whole. The duo set out to cover a lot of ground in this issue, as they welcome Bruce Wayne back into the cowl, chronicle the final clash between the Batmen of Gotham and its would-be destroyer and bring the themes and ideas that have been driving "Superheavy" full-circle. Needless to say, this issue is a smashing success.

Heck, it's tempting to give Batman #50 high marks solely on the strength of Capullo's redesigned Batman costume. The new Batsuit combines elements of the current New 52 costume, the Zero Year costume, the elegant Batman: The Animated Series design and Jim Gordon's current bodysuit into one attractive whole. Capullo emphasizes the striking iconography of the Bat symbol and creates the impression of the new suit being functional and durable without burdening Batman's look with stray, pointless lines. Colorist FCO Plascencia makes the most of the new look, subtly changing the color of the cape to reflect the lighting around Batman and going that much further towards capturing the distinctive style of BTAS.
