Marvel has launched several Black Widow solo comics in the years since the character made her cinematic debut, but none have exactly lit the market on fire. This time around, Marvel has turned to the creative team that elevated Daredevil to new heights in the Marvel NOW era - writer Mark Waid, artist Chris Samnee and colorist Matthew Wilson. That lineup may not necessarily guarantee record sales, but ti certainly results in an excellent reading experience.
This first issue doesn't offer a clear indication of how the new team will be overhauling Natasha's status quo for the post-Secret Wars Marvel Universe. The dialogue is minimal (with exactly one line of dialogue from Natasha herself) and the plot is about as barebones as it gets. The whole issue chronicles a frantic chase scene as Natasha escapes a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and battles her pursuers across the skies and streets of Manhattan. The hows and whys of the situation aren't a concern right now. That minimalist approach is actually very refreshing considering how many first issues trip over themselves trying to world-build and catch readers up to date. Here, Waid and Samnee simply dive right into the fray and trust that readers know the basics of Black Widow and are happy to come along.
