With more and more Xbox games also making their way to Windows 10 PCs, a greater number of eyeballs have been shifting towards Forza Motorsport 6. The question has been raised whether Microsoft's premier racing franchise will also make its way to PC. That answer is a resounding... sort of!
This morning, Microsoft announced an abbreviated version of last year's Xbox racer will come to Windows 10, called Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. This iteration of the game will feature many elements of Forza 6, like Drivatar opponents and Forzavista. However, it will feature 20 tracks and a selection of 63 cars, as opposed to the Xbox One version's 460 cars.
So then how much will this smaller version of Forza cost? The answer is nothing. Microsoft and Turn 10 are offering this package for free.
"And why it's free? It's because we can make it free," said Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt. "It totally makes sense for trying to invite new players in, we would just make it free. And also, if you think about showcasing DirectX 12, showcasing the Windows Store, and showcasing (the Universal Windows Platform), we would make it free."
Forza Motorsport 6: Apex will indeed boast the power of DirectX 12 and can run at 4K resolution. As such, many of Forza 6's existing textures and visual elements, like walls, surfaces, lens flare, and dust particles, among other things will be upgraded for 4K monitors. While the final specs for Apex have not been finalized, the demos were seen running with the following bits of hardware:
- Intel i7-6700k CPU
- Nvidia 980 GTi graphics card
- 32GB RAM
Apex marks an admitted experiment for Turn 10 and it will be measuring feedback intently. If this version of the game takes off, a fuller version of Forza may be on the table for the future. Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is set to launch on Windows 10 PCs this Spring.
